Meet the Maker

Hi, I'm Crystal McVicar, the creator behind all of the magical handmade creations here at Mycelium and Sol.

I was born and raised in Taranaki, Aotearoa / New Zealand — and I'm proud to call this place home. It's a land absolutely abundant in natural inspiration; from mountain to sea, from lush fields to native bush and winding rivers. Growing up in these surroundings forged a deep connection to nature within me, and helped shape my own spiritual journey.

Like many others, I have endured hardship and faced physical and mental challenges along my path. Having a creative outlet during those times has saved me more times than I could count. I live with physical limitations while raising five children of my own — the road is never straight — but my creative process and connection to the natural world and my spiritual self means I can keep on going.

I wish to share my creations with the world, offering beauty, meaning, symbolism, and something sacred to others for their own personal journey. I believe that every piece I make is made for one person — somebody who looks at it and thinks "yup, that's mine" — like they were made for each other.

I'm so excited to share this journey with you, and I appreciate every bit of support and love I have received so far. 🌿

The Name

The world of mushrooms is so beautiful and intricate. Mycelium is the vast underground network that forms the communication and life source of the forest — a living web that connects all organic beings to one another. It is a reminder that we are never truly alone; that beneath the surface, everything is interwoven.

Sol means sun, light. From the darkness of the underground, we reach for the light.
